I have worked as an educational psychologist in the field of leadership development in a variety of settings. At the same time, I have had the opportunity as a theologian to study mental training for what is often called “mindfulness.” One piece of interesting research relevant to both areas emerged from the Department of the Navy. The Navy invested time and resources identifying mental strategies to increase success rates for Navy SEAL recruits (i.e. BUD/S). You can use these same mental strategies not only in your own physical training, but in diverse other aspects of life. The four-part formula for mental toughness is: Goal Setting; Visualization of Success; Positive Self-Talk; and Arousal Control (Deep Breathing).
